During World War II, the railroads were major employers. The history of railroading is displayed in a museum in "Old Town" in Sacramento.

Locally, you can fish for salmon in the Amercian River or trout in Folsom Lake. Sacramento is also known as "river city" because it borders the American River and the Sacramento River. There are approximately 30 miles of jogging and bicycling trails along the river. You can also find great fishing and "white water rafting" in the foothills and mountains just east of this area. If you are interested in sports, it's the home of the NBA basketball team, the "Kings", the Oakland A's baseball farm team the "River Cats" and professional tennis. Shopping is one of the oldest forms of recreation enjoyed by a family, and there are major malls throughout the region.
